Walk to Prevent!

Join us for our 8^th Ann Arbor walk to prevent suicide! The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a 3-5 mile scenic walk taking place in more than 200 communities across the country this fall. Proceeds will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, to fund research, education, survivor and awareness programs — both to prevent suicide and to assist those affected by suicide.

Why should I walk?

·        Over 33,300 people in the United States die by suicide every year.

·        Suicide is fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 years in the United States.

·        Every day, approximately 90 Americans take their own life, and 2,300 more attempt to do so.

·        Ninety percent of all people who die by suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death.

·        Among young people aged 10-14 years, the rate has doubled in the last two decades.

·        Over 60 percent of all people who die by suicide suffer from major depression.

·        Depression affects more than 24 million people.

·        Depression is among the most treatable of psychiatric illnesses. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression respond positively to treatment, and almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. But first, depression has to be recognized.
